E-Journal #4. Upcoming Revolutionary Changes with 3D Printing

Upcoming Revolutionary Changes with 3D Printing

A great deal of time, money and efforts are needed to make your imagination a three-dimensional reality. By the way, can you believe that there is a magical technology to knock your imagination out with only the design quickly? 3D printing technology enables this wonderful creature. Surprisingly, it was about 30 years ago that this amazing 3D printer was invented by Chuck Hull, the co-founder of 3D Systems. Different from the 2D printers that we usually use, 3D printers create solid objects by materials like plastic. Moreover, these ones utilize 3D modeling data instead of documents or image files. The remarkable point is that 3D Printing technology has huge potential for development in various fields: manufacture, aerospace, and medical.

3D printing can contribute to great value in manufacturing sector when making prototypes and developing personalized products. For example, General Motors saved time in redesigning Chevrolet Malibu 2013 model with the 3D printing. The time to be required to update reduced from 3~4 years to within 18 months and the development of Malibu was possible at a much lower cost than clay sculpting in the past. Furthermore, sporting goods bland Adidas unveiled Futurecraft 3D, a special 3D printed running shoe which meets the needs of individual foot such as the footprint, exercise habits, and weight. Now we can imagine the future to get 3D printed personalized running shoes by scanning own footprints and walking a few steps briefly. Like this, business will be able to produce not only satisfying consumers' each demand but also save the expense like existing mass production system.

Through 3D printing, aerospace can be developed. It is common that there are scenes that the characters suffer from difficulties or address problems due to unimportant small materials in sci-fi movies. Likewise, in real space, there are many different problems because the condition in space is really different from the one on the earth. However, we can overcome this matter via 3D printers. When astronauts prepare to go their space exploration, they do not have to carry spare parts or materials no longer. If astronauts exhaust tools in space, they will be able to print out more. The design for parts of tools can be preloaded on the 3D printer or be uploaded from the earth directly. In order to carry out only one mission, a great deal of time and money are invested. It may also threaten the safety of astronauts. Therefore, with 3D printing, we will be able to find out discoveries that can change future of human beings.

The last benefit of 3D printing is that it can help save lives. Organ dysfunction caused by diseases, accidents, aging, and birth defects is a crucial difficulty. A cure for organ failure relies on organ transplants from donors mostly. Accordingly, patients had to wait for finding an organ donor who has an exact tissue match and cost huge money. However, 3D printer can be a good way to save them. 3D printing can print organs from a patient’s own cells so it can help ease the pain.

3D printing is amazing invention because of its technology itself and has infinite possibilities and advantages. This innovation can create imagination in reality, save time and money, and satisfy diverse individual requirements in complicated society. If 3D printing is be enhanced in manufacturing, aerospace, and medical industry, then we will see revolutionary progress that we imagined soon.

E-Journal #3. The Way to Protect Your Health and The Earth

<The Way to Protect Your Health and The Earth>

Today more various kinds of foods are on our table than before. Importing all sorts of agricultural products enabled people to eat many foods around the world. The examples of this in Korea are Philippine bananas, Chilean grapes and American rice. This is really common situation not only in Korea but also all over the world. By the way, do you know these imported farm products that you bought carelessly due to cheap price can pollute our planet? These products can cause air, soil and water pollution, which harms the Earth.

First of all, imported agricultural products are major contributors to air pollution. Imagine that the whole journey from foreign farm to our table. Philippine bananas flew about 2,600km and Chilean grapes, surprisingly, flew about 18,000km to come to Korea. During transportation, it passed a lot of vehicles like truck, ship and airplane. Actually, there are approximately 16,000 planes to transport the foods. They emit 600 million tons of carbon dioxide, which account for more than 30 percent of entire emissions of carbon dioxide in the world. In this way, the long-distance transportation of imported farm products uses huge fossil energy and emits enormous greenhouse gas in storage, package and movement.

Another pollution caused by imported foods is soil pollution. Since imported foods should go through the long-term distribution process, it is true that chemicals such as pesticides, disinfectant, insecticide and herbicide are used excessively to maintain the quality. There are more than 1000 types of pesticides and the amount of the usage is tremendous. This usage has a bad impact on our soil as well as our health. That is because it is not removed naturally but accumulated on the land. These accumulated chemicals devastate the soil and cause all animals and plants that grow on this land to become polluted. Terribly, it can lead to serious problem of ecosystem.

Lastly, imported farm products have the possibility to pollute our water. To increase price competitiveness most imported product are mass produced with non eco-friendly ways. Especially, the usage of chemical fertilizers improved agricultural productivity but it also caused a lot of damages. The chemical fertilizers are mainly made up of nitrogen and potassium, which flow into stream or lake and thus lead to eutrophication of water. Other chemicals used in production and transportation of the imported groceries are the same. These all things can become a significant source of water pollution.

Reducing the imported agricultural products and choosing ‘local foods’ is a good alternative way to ensure a sustainable future. The reason is that local foods are transported shorter, emit less amount of carbon dioxide and use less chemicals than imported ones. Therefore, if Korean choose domestic tangerines instead of imported orange or eat some fruits and vegetables in season instead of them all year round, people can enjoy fresh foods and help the national economy. Moreover, they can save our environment. Protecting our health and our Earth at the same, What an effective way we can!

E-Journal #2. The Devil Wears Prada in New York

<The Devil Wears Prada in New York>

As soon as people see some movie titles, they would expect the story what will happen in the movie before watching it. Moreover, they would imagine the specific place related to the story and the representative symbols or images could come to mind. It is common that people associate the movie with particular place and images. The Devil Wears Prada is a suitable example to show such suggestion. In this movie, almost all events happen in the center of New York city. As the film title indicates, this movie is not so favorable to luxury brands like Prada. In this way, the New York city, the background of the movie, representing both the fashion and the wealth, plays a significant role in sending the message of this movie.

The movie deals with the events in the fashion world. The main character, Andrea in an aspiring journalist, gets a job as a personal assistant to Miranda Priestly, the unfriendly chief editor of Runway fashion magazine. At the beginning, Andrea ridicules her gossipy and fashion-conscious co-workers. The co-workers mock Andrea due to her poor sense of style and displeased attitude too. Above all, Miranda orders impossible tasks to Andrea night and day. Nevertheless, she manages to accomplish it. Andrea gradually begins to dress more stylishly and to be accepted by Miranda. Andrea walks around the street with a cup of coffee in hand and a bunch of shopping bags in the other hand. Therefore, busy New York city is the perfect background to describe the glamorous fashion industry changing every moment.

In this movie, many well-known luxury brands appear such as Prada, Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. Andrea’s co-workers spend a huge amount of money with expensive clothes and accessories. They also flaunt their luxurious and dressy style and are eager to be recognized by Miranda. However, ironically, even though Miranda has riches and fame in her job, she feels lonely and hard to get along well with her family. A lot of professionals who want to get the opportunities for success head to New York, the main city of The United States representing capitalism. There are complicated circumstances behind the success and workaholics. Thus, only New York city can convey the emptiness and loneliness with glamour of Miranda who is the envy of all.

All features of this movie—the trend in the world, glittering runway with luxury items, desire for dream and self-discovery—indicate the metropolis. There is no any other place that can send a meaning of The Devil Wears Prada as well as New York.

E-Journal #1. Necessity of Geotourism in Gyeongju

<Necessity of Geotourism in Gyeongju>

There are many different purposes and reasons for travelling. Some tourists go to the mountains to enjoy sports like hiking or skiing, while some go to the beach or the island to take a rest and enjoy their holiday in summer. Especially, the travelers who are interested in history go to historical and cultural sites to experience firsthand as well as just look around. Accordingly, it is important that the destination should grasp and satisfy the needs of tourists. Over the years, there has been an increasing number of visiting Korea but it has been focused only in Seoul, Pusan and Jeju island. Contrastively, the number of visiting Gyeongju has shown a downward tendency, though there are numerous heritages. Why does this happen? This situation can be solved in terms of both preservation and the adequate utilization of resources through ‘geotourism’.

In Gyeongju, the rapid industrialization caused imprudent and myopic development and thus, brought damages to preservation of nature and cultural properties. For example, there are a lot of large modern-looking buildings at the center of Gyeongju. Besides, people can see many flashing neon signs, even late at night. These appearances do not assimilate with the historical and beautiful surroundings. Although Gyeongju is the attractive city that tourists can be impressed by just looking around the city, the structures spoil the beauty of the city. Therefore, it is necessary to foster old-fashioned and traditional environment through geotourism. If the beautiful natural landscape and the historical properties will be preserved well as it was then the Gyeongju can attract more tourists.

When it comes to ‘the adequate utilization’, even though Gyeongju has a great wealth of valuable tourism assets, it does not use them sufficiently. Nowadays, the tourists who travel historical destination prefer experiencing firsthand and fully understanding about tradition with sympathy to just sightseeing. However, the tourists visiting Gyeongju may just enjoy static tours. Therefore, it is required to change the ways to travel through geotourism. For instance, experiencing the real life of our ancestors, watching the performances related to our proud history which made by local people will be great way to meet the needs of tourists. It will also able to create more job opportunities, bring the harmony among local citizens. Finally, Gyeongju will be able to become the best destination to go and maintain their own tradition.

In korea, Gyeongju is well known for the old historical capital. That is because Gyeongju was the capital city of Silla dynasty a thousand year ago. If the city will not only preserve but also utilize adequately the attraction of cultural assets, then geotourism will be realized. It means to bring a lot of benefits to the city. The local people can take pride in their region and develop their local community by themselves. Eventually, they can depict 'the millenium moment'.

Hello everyone!

Hello! Nice to meet you all :)

My name is Juhui Jang and you can call me Alice.
I'm studying business and international trade. I have only one more semester left so I'm going to graduate from school next year.
I have grown up in Sillim, Seoul, which is near Seoul National University.
I'm keen on cooking especially Korean food. If it's possible, I'd like to learn baking because I love bread..♡

Speaking of my family, there are only four of us. I've got one sister, myself and my parents. All of us are so busy with work. My sister is a dancer and she teaches students at the art high school. My father is an architect and he built our own house where we have been living for a long time. My mother has been running a korean barbeque restaurant since i was in high school. It's really well known in our town.

Regarding my experiences, I went to Australia to study English in 2013. To be honest, I was bored with English because I had to study it only for the exam. I hadn't had any interest in English before i got Australia. However, everything was changed. It's was a great turning point in my life! Using English for communication made me study harder. It was interesting, not boring anymore. I had such a great time there.
Since I came back to Korea, I have focused on studying not only my major but also English. I'm sure that my english has been improved steadily. I would like to get a job abroad so I will keep studying english. Additionally, I have various work experiences. I worked at Namsan tower, Italian restaurant and elementary school. I also worked at the café about 8 months recently.

Finally, I'm really looking forward to spending time with you all and Kyle! Thank you for reading this and have a good day :D
